We will walk you through single-stage furnaces, which turn on full blast whenever the thermostat drops below the desired temperature; two-stage furnaces, which operate continuously at a low level to provide a uniform temperature and bring in a second stage when the temperature drops drastically; and two-stage units with a variable-speed blower, which additionally dehumidify the air during the months when the system is cooling instead of heating.

Efficiency is worth understanding before you buy. An 80% AFUE furnace and a 90–95% AFUE furnace differ in venting, condensate handling and installed cost. Although furnaces are rated according to efficiency, the most important thing to consider is your desired comfort level — once that is met, take efficiency into account, factoring in the size of the house and the average operating cost.
